Handbag Dyeing Workshop
What is special about this workshop?
The technique that you will learn about and use in this workshop is called Katazome. It is one of Japan's traditional stencil dyeing techniques, that is first developed as an inexpensive way to dye kimonos and other textiles. Nowadays, it has evolved into a respected art form in its own rights. It is well known for being an art technique that allows for versatility and a great amount of artistic expression.
Meet the Artist: Nahoko Yamazaki
Originally from Kanagawa prefecture, Nahoko graduated from the Joshibi University of Art and Design. Following an apprenticeship at the Utatsuyama Kogei Kobo Workshop here in Kanazawa, she decided to settle down in the city in order to continue her work.
Her main focus is on fabric dyeing, with mostly motifs based on familiar things with delightful designs. Her style falls into the somewhat minimalistic and slightly abstract category, with the aim for viewers to have fun with her art.
Workshop Overview: Steps
① Design, draw, and cut your own paper stencils
② With the stencils you made and colored sponges, create your very own handbag!
※ You are encouraged to let your imagination run wild in this workshop, and the bags are machine-washable

By taking part in these hands-on workshops, you will help contribute to creating new opportunities for up-and-coming artists working in Kanazawa.
Japan is currently facing a nationwide crisis, as more and more artisans find themselves without anyone in
younger generations to teach their techniques to preserve Japan’s precious traditional crafts.
We believe that participation in these workshops will benefit the artists, not only by exposing these crafts to more potential successors,
but also by providing them with inspiration and motivation through their interactions with you. We therefore wholeheartedly invite you to join us for the workshop!
